Gdynia is part of the Tricity metropolitan area on the Baltic coast, combining a major seaport, industrial and logistics areas, dense urban districts and expanding peri-urban zones. The wider functional area is shaped by port-related activities, commuter flows between cities and surrounding municipalities, and valuable coastal and forest ecosystems.
Key challenges
Existing mobility networks are insufficient to meet growing demand sustainably, with limited bus lane infrastructure and public transport options for peri-urban residents.
Peri-urban Park & Ride facilities and transport hubs lack integrated renewable energy infrastructure and EV charging solutions.
Renewable energy communities (RECs) are at an early stage, with limited information, advisory capacity and citizen engagement structures to support their growth.
TEN-T requirements for the Metropolitan Tri-City Area need to be integrated into long-term sustainable urban mobility planning by 2040.
What the Replicator will address through ALTHEA
The Gdynia Replicator will draw on the experiences of port and logistics oriented TSLLs to shape its own integrated transition pathways. It will:
Expand multimodal transport infrastructure
Developing multimodal hubs with PV installations in parking areas and implementing 4 new bus lanes by 2035 to enhance sustainable transport options and accessibility under the Mobility as a Right paradigm.
Integrate renewable energy into transport infrastructure
Conducting feasibility studies and piloting power-and-storage solutions for EV charging and public transport integration, with PV infrastructure in Park & Ride hubs.
Develop a Bus Pass Corridor Network
And expand the sustainable transport modal split to increase renewable energy use across the transport sector.
Develop cross-sectoral industrial symbiosis models
Engaging 5 companies or institutions per year in schemes that offset 100 tonnes of CO₂ per year, accelerating climate compensation in peri-urban industrial areas.
Establish a Renewable Energy Community information and advisory center
To support the development of energy communities for climate-neutral transition strategies across the peri-urban area.
Launch a Citizen Lab
To foster collaborative climate-neutral solutions, creating a TSLL community contact point with focus groups on both mobility and RECs.
Develop a TSLL roadmap
And integratie TEN-T requirements into the Metropolitan Tri-City Area SUMP by 2040.
